For over a century, the George Nelson family has provided quality resort facilities in Lutsen. In 1886 a Swedish immigrant named Charles Axel Nelson (C.A.A) Nelson and his wife, Anna, housed and served those needing shelter from the southern heat, allergies as well as serving as a boarding facility for local trappers, loggers and fisherman. After returning from World War II and the famed 10th Mountain Division, George Nelson Jr., grandson of C.A.A., convinced his father to develop a ski area - an idea he brought back from the mountains of Italy. In 1948, downhill skiing became a reality in Lutsen. As the ski area grew, so did the need for additional lodging. And soon, Lutsen became known as a winter destination area. The Nelson family eventually sold the ski area in 1981 and sold Lutsen Resort in 1987. Recognizing the need for additional summer activity, the family donated approximately 350 acres of land in 1988 to the people of Cook County for the expressed purpose to have the county develop a first class championship golf course. The result is one of the most beautiful golf courses in the entire Midwest - Superior National at Lutsen - a 27 hole artistic masterpiece. Today, the Nelson family continues with its high quality hospitality tradition by developing homesites along the golf course fairways of Superior National. Approximately 100 acres is dedicated to 39 residential homesites. The development was planned using trained civil and environmental engineers to ensure the integrity of the area was not comprised while providing a development that would in fact compliment and enhance the natural surroundings. Welcome to the Heritage at Lutsen!
